There’s nothing more sentimental than documenting your life, and that's exactly what Johnson or Mr. Long on Youtube do. Learn more about his life as PinoySeoul gets to know him through the BUHAY KOREA series.
Johnson Diaz Llagas, who goes by the name "Mister Long" on Youtube, is a Filipino student living in South Korea and a recipient of the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS). He is pursuing his Master's degree at Chonnam National University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Department of Integrative Food Bioscience and Biotechnology. Aside from his studies, he also works as a research assistant and, of course, a vlogger, where he shares his life in South Korea.
Before doing his Master's degree in South Korea, Johnson was actually a registered nutritionist dietician here in the Philippines, which can also be seen in his old Youtube videos, which are usually about nutrition and occasional song covers, showing another side of him to his viewers.
He also taught Koreans English, which led him to explore their language and culture.
Just like how we see his life on YouTube, Johnson shared that he genuinely enjoys doing his studies. He mentioned they were required to take a language training course for a year to pass the TOPIK exam. It was his best year as he met his new family in a foreign country.
But of course, life is not all rainbows and sunshine, and Johnson’s journey in South Korea has its own ups and downs. Although being away from his family is not really a problem for him, as he used to live away from home in the Philippines due to his work, Johnson emphasized his struggle with language. Communication is a daily challenge he faces as a foreigner studying in another country. Talking and making Korean friends is challenging because of the language barrier. Of course, being homesick is also a challenge, especially when you need to adjust and embrace the changes in their food, as South Korea’s base ingredient for their local food is chili paste.
But regardless of these challenges, Johnson was not only able to discover South Korea and its culture, but this opportunity also let him meet people from different countries with different cultures, which helped him better understand cultural differences.
As Johnson continuously inspires and shares his life on YouTube for his viewers, who aspire to study and live in South Korea, he would like to reiterate that living abroad is not for the fainthearted. There are many things to consider, but many opportunities are also awaiting you. Living, studying, or working abroad is less grand than you think. Do all the necessary thinking and paperwork and take the leap for a brighter future!
Being a GKS recipient goes beyond the title, just like Johnson, who showed perseverance and determination in learning and adjusting to his life in South Korea.
