J-Hope is known as a member of a popular K-Pop boy group, BTS. He is known as the group's rapper and the main dancer, leading the group with their performances, such as their choreography. ARMYs are incredulous that each group member is now undergoing solo activities, including j-hope, after a long project with their group. Jack In the Box was released last July 2022, with a scheme of having a documentary in collaboration with Disney+ that aired last February 17, 2023, which happens to be the day before J-hope's birthday. J-hope also validated his capability as a creative director by leading all aspects, from music to concept and visual elements, of his solo album, Jack In The Box (July 2022), which addresses the passion and agony he goes through as an artist.
After his debut mixtape with Hope World was released last 2018, J-hope released Jack in the Box as a full-length album with 10 tracklists and his lead single More, followed by the Arson. Jack in the Box was released last July 15, 2022, which implies the troubles and problems of everyone, which anyone can relate to.
“It felt like it was time to show a maturer side of me” - J-Hope
Kim Namjoon also conveyed his full support and positive feedback for his fellow member about Jack in the Box, which gives out the entire motivation for J-Hope as a solo artist, thinking he was representing his group, BTS. J-Hope sincerely prepared the album with the thought that the audience would judge what he would release.
As a solo artist with a strict preparation
From music to concept and visual elements, j-hope entirely gave his attention and responsibilities as the artist and the singer of the album and as a director. Unlike his previous experiences with his BTS members, the pressure of being a solo artist completely differed from when he was with his group. J-hope reassures that every single detail of the album and the performance is ready to serve the audience.
Jack in the Box Listening Party
“So many people came and congratulated me…this is such a meaningful moment for me.”
As part of the Jack in the Box promotion, J-hope came up with the idea of executing a listening party for his album with other artists, which he invited one by one. Listening parties could be more prevalent in South Korea. Most likely, j-hope is the first Korean act to do so in his country. As part of the event, j-hope had a food test and visited the venue for the listening party to monitor it himself as well as check the music videos which will be played at the party. He also packed and prepared souvenirs for the guests.
J-Hope also has to act as the host for his event but needs to gain experience with it as he has zero experience with hosting. Luckily j-hope is a bright guy and lightened the venue during and after the show. J-Hope thanked his guests for supporting him and did not forget to thank the staff who were also part of the show that made it possible. He also revealed how he barely got sleep for the pre-preparation for the party, stayed up all night finalizing them, slept only for 2 hours, and felt relieved after the successful listening party.
“This will be remembered as an important milestone in my career” - J-Hope
Lollapalooza behind the scenes
“The message I'd like to convey through my songs is nothing grand… “A little change goes along way; we should all take action…” that’s what I wanted to say” - J-Hope
In preparation for the Lollapalooza show, the staff is having difficulty arranging the tracks to be performed at Lollapalooza as it may feel foreign to the listeners with all Korean language songs, so they're coming up with the idea of adding a BTS song (English) for the audience. J-hope rehearsed with a band to check everything before the post-event, including the lighting and the choreography. He then performed Dynamite (Tropical Mix), and the crowd loved the idea of including an unexpected BTS song.
In 2022, j-hope made history as the first South Korean act to headline a main stage at Lollapalooza. An outstanding stage performance and the ARMYs enjoyed the performance. They showed their support with their chants as enjoyment for the successful show while singing their hearts and cheering for j-hope.
“J-hope in the box is focused on showing j-hope as a person on hope on the street, I’ll be going back to my roots” - J-Hope
Jimin also attended the Lollapalooza show to support his hyung. He couldn't help but show his pride in his hyung while cheering with the crowd and behind the scenes. The show felt like a dream concert for every ARMYs and Hobi stan. Therefore, j-hope share's how he's scared of being a headliner as a solo on stage after BTS.
A look back to the performance
After promoting for almost 2 months, J-hope still can't believe that he happened to perform at Lollapalooza and made it in the headline. Looking back with The Red Bullet, the first concert tour of BTS, j-hope looks back at his first rehearsal with the same venue and now rehearsing as one of the top artists in the world. He feels the pleasure and happiness of the achievements he has fulfilled so far as a singer, member, and solo artist.
“I started out as a dancer, for me, everything started from there, so I’d like a chance to look back on that” - J-Hope
Three days after the performance, j-hope shares how he had an achy body after the show, although he felt relieved after hearing the crowds cheer and seeing how the ARMYs waved their Army Bombs. The audience sang along during his performance in the lollapalooza show.
“Special thanks to our biggest voice ARMY” - j-hope
