While everyone is gushing over Korean pop music, a few are stirred to a different track and find themselves immersed in the diverse world of indie music—the supposed counterpart of K-pop that focuses mainly on their music and refrain from being too tied up in commercialization.
Unlike other genres it is not limited to just solely acoustic, rock, jazz, or any other kind of music, it covers all other kinds of genres. It is an umbrella term for all genres of music that are produced without a record label.
The number of listeners of indie music may not be as big as the other genres, but it also has devoted followers who might be listening to k-indie music for quite some time now. However, some K-indie acts remain unrecognized or gain very little popularity even in their own country.
One K-indie artist that deserves more recognition and appreciation is Lee Ji-Won better known as Jimmy Brown, a man who narrates different tales of love through his mesmerizing voice. He is a singer-songwriter whose music mainly revolves around love as he hopes to offer solace through his music and the love that he has.
Jimmy did not plan to go into music but found himself immersed in it when he was 19 after listening to Chris Brown and Kanye, and soon after, he debuted with his first single ‘She Lovin’ It’ in 2017.
Most of his lyrics are written in English which made him gain more listeners from other countries than from his own. Jimmy has 1.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify which was double of what he had last year and thousands of subscribers on YouTube.
If you wish to find solace just like what Jimmy hopes to offer, here are some of his tracks that you should listen to:
1. Let Me Know
“If you ever feel down and out, let me know”
“It's just you and me, we gon' dance like this”
