Some of you may not know that this drama is originally a webtoon that you can read from the Webtoon app. Five episodes are free to unlock every day. (Please read Yumi's Cell in Webtoon app only, and leave some heart to help the author. Do not patronize illegal copies of this webtoon.)
I stumbled upon this webtoon in 2016 and I remember how I anticipated new episodes every week. You may compare this to the movie Inside Out, but Yumi's Cell suited me more, age-wise. :-)
Kim Yumi, played by Kim Go Eun, is an ordinary single woman in her early 30s. She has different cells that portray different emotions. She also has hunger cell, lust cell, cleaning cell, fashion cell, etc. One of the highlights of this drama is seeing how these cells fight inside her head. The chaos of the cells is somehow realistic. They're all cute, funny, and enjoyable to watch.
The story shifts from Yumi's point of view to what's happening inside her head. It began with love cell being in a coma after her last break-up. It woke up after a false alarm and then Yumi eventually met Go Woong, played by Ahn Bo Hyun. The drama will uncover Yumi's personal growth and life decisions with the help of her cells.
Yumi is a silent person with a lot of stories to tell. The audience would see that a silent river has great depths. Sometimes it takes a deeper dig.
It also showed the audience the consequence of assuming and judging easily. This is the most tricky part most especially in romantic relationships. I think this is a great show for young adults, whether in a relationship or not.
Sometimes, we need to step back and see the bigger picture before acting on anything. I think the most important lesson from this drama is not allowing your pride to eat you alive.
I also noticed the uncanny resemblance of Ahn Bo Hyun to Go Woong in the comics. I felt like he is the muse of the author. This is one of the reasons why I watched it, too. Their casting director is brilliant!
Fun fact: Did you know that Yumi's physical appearance in the comics is based on former AOA's member, Choa?
I'm not a fan of both leads, but they had great chemistry in this drama. They totally hit it right off the bat. It made me squeal like a teenager and honestly speaking, they also broke me real hard and I can't wait for season 2.
The official soundtrack (OST) of the drama is astounding, too. K-dramas need to have great songs to play in the background. I think this is one of the strengths of this drama. Yumi's Cell OST will definitely go to my playlist.
Yumi's Cell has 14 episodes, and season 2 will air in 2022. While we all wait for the next season, please take some time to read the webtoon. :-)
