If you are a fan of “Chicago Typewriter,“ maybe you've been wondering who this artist behind the hit song "Satellite" is. Why is he so great with this song? So I started looking into who this artist is. At first, I assumed he or she was a well-known artist, but I was completely taken aback. Imagine how sincere his song could be, and his voice was good for me. If you're in a senti (sentimental) mood, his song is so beautiful that it gives peace of mind even if you don't understand it completely. You might feel as if you do because music language is universal, isn't it? So, let's get started.
His real name is Michael Y. Kim, also known as MYK, and most commonly known for indie rock-world as Saltnpaper, read as (Salt and Paper). He is a Korean-American musician best known for his hip-hop work with Epik High, has a much broader reach as a talented songwriter, with one-man-band Saltnpaper, and he's now pursuing a modern rock sound.
MYK blossomed into a host, disc jockey, and producer in Seoul, and is best known for his collaborations with Tablo and Epik High, as well as his participation in Tablo's Map the Soul project and label. Given his extensive songwriting contributions to Epik High, many consider him an honorary member.
On the other hand, he abandons hip-hop in favor of a softer industrial rock sound and becomes the name MYK would use for his rock compositions. His solo debut has been in the works for a long time, and his fans have been waiting for it for far too long, but SALTNPAPER does not disappoint. Who'd have known that under his scruffy beard and edgy look, there was a man with a heart of gold?
You might come across some of his unusual and cool covers, such as Photograph by Ed Sheeran and Yellow by Coldplay.
Saltnpaper released in November 2014, his self-titled mini-album, his very first, and brought in sound hybridization, which some listeners may not be anticipating. It's composed of nine tracks. Those are “Love Strong,” which features Tablo, and has a thick, reflective verse sewn effortlessly into a structured piece. It is the only song that represents MYK's hip-hop roots. The title track, "Hats," is more of a soft rock style. It's also the most western-influenced song on the soundtrack. However, songs like "Autumn" and "Storm" are more detached in that they are vocally emotional and intense, and they express a lot of lyrical talent. (You guys try it, XOXO)
In February 2015, he released his first single, "Perfect," which also featured Park Shin Hye.
This song was recorded in March 2015 and consists of two tracks, Goodnight, and Island, each lasting four minutes and thirty seconds.
The single "One Heart" was released the same year as Goodnight + Island.
Not all of the songs depend on a large backing band, such as "Paradise," which relies on Saltnpaper's guitar and vocals despite the presence of bass and drums. Spin is distinct in that the songs cover a wide range of genres. The song "Heavy Muse" is a departure from alternative rock. With a little rearranging and more distortion on the instruments, it could almost be classified as grunge. It was released in May 2016, and for me, this is the best among the rest.
Go (Korean and English versions) is a song by Saltnpaper released on February 1, 2016. It is track #1 in the album Cheese in the Trap (Original TV Soundtrack) Part 5.
"Bye, Autumn" was released in October 2016 for the Original Television Soundtrack of Jealousy Incarnate / Dare to Dream.
Is it an LSS (Last Song Syndrome)? You're not alone; this song isn't at all dull, and it's ideal for a sentimental mood. It was released in April 2017 as the official soundtrack for "Chicago Typewriter Part 1"
It was released in December 2017 and composed of 14 songs such as Time, Other Side, and Paean. This album, entitled "More than just Circles," has a rather self-referential, intimate sound to it, almost as if it were a celebrity singer-debut songwriter's album. The lyrics, arrangement, and compositions all allude to feelings that are never fully expressed. This album is likely to mean a lot more to Saltnpaper than it is to the average listener.
"You make me," a song from the OST of Two Cops, was released in December 2017.
"I swear" is a song from the OST of Cross, which was released in February 2018.
It was launched in November 2018 for Ms. Ma, Nemesis Part 4 (Original Television Soundtrack)
This song was released in January 2019 for the Original Television Soundtrack of the K-drama Series, Encounter. This song was so amazingggg! 👏💓
This song was released in August 2019 for part 2 of the Original Television Soundtrack of
MYK or Saltnpaper may have fewer camera spots, but after reading this, you've begun to stan them, not just because they're not well-known, but also because their music is intimate and self-written. I must believe that they've worked their way up from the bottom.
Watch out for the OST of "Doctor John" which is out now on Spotify and other music streaming sites.
